Rotary kiln for a cement plant
A rotary kiln is to process materials at an extreme heat in order to derive minerals from the materials such as cement, lime, kaolin, , vermiculite, titanium dioxide, alumina and iron ore. In the case of rotary kilns for a cement plant, the process where calcium carbonate reacts with materials including silica produces mineral called calcium silicates. The cement production industry produces over a billion tons of cement, making this type of rotary kiln a very important component within this industry.
Below we will explain how it contributes greatly to the industrial industry.
Application Process of a Rotary Kiln
Since its design, cement rotary kilns have been designed in two different ways, each with its own function. The two different designs are called the dry process and the wet process. The dry process is when all minerals were ground to form a powder and then processed accordingly. The wet process is when wet-ground minerals were added to water to result in a fine paste much like paint.
One problem this was found within the wet process is that much more fuel was used during the loading process into the kiln as the water content had to be burnt off first. This led to low energy efficiency during the processing applications. A larger rotary cement kiln was also needed as the water content gave the minerals more volume and also made it heavier, due to the fact that this water content could be up to 45%.
The wet process ultimately became one of the most popular processes because of its many advantages. This is because it was found that wet grinding is a much more proficient way of processing when compared to dry grinding. The reason for this is that the heating process in the rotary kiln is made easier by the granular crumble formed by the drying of the wet grinded materials, causing for a better raw product when compared to a dry grinded method.
